What is a Casual Employment Information Statement?
The Casual Employment Information Statement (CEIS) is a statement issued by the Fair Work Ombudsman and it provides new casual employees with information about their conditions of employment.
The CEIS has information about:
the definition of what a casual employee is
when an employer has to offer casual conversion to a casual employee (this means offering a casual employee a permanent position)
when an employer doesn’t have to offer casual conversion
when a casual employee can request casual conversion
casual conversion entitlements of casual employees employed by small business employers (a small business is a business that has less than 15 employees), these entitlements are different to a large business that has 15 or more employees
the role of the Fair Work Commission to deal with disputes about casual conversion.
When do I give my casual employee a copy of the Casual Employment Information Statement?
As an employer, you have to give every new casual employee a Casual Employment Information Statement before, or as soon as possible after, they start their new job.
You also have to give every new casual employee a copy of the Fair Work Information Statement (FWIS) at the same time. So as casual employee gets both statements, and a permanent employee only gets a copy of the FWIS. You can read more about the Fair Work Information Statement in our blog about the FWIS.
You must also provide the CEIS to casual employees at the following times during the employment relationship:
for small business employers (with less than 15 employees) after 12 months of employment
for other employers (with 15 employees or more) – after 6 and 12 months of employment, and then after every 12 months of employment.
Providing employees with the CEIS
Employers can give casual employees the CEIS:
in person
by mail
by email
by emailing a link to the CEIS that is available of the Fair Work Ombudsman website
by emailing a link to a copy of the CEIS available on the employer’s intranet or shared drive (making sure you have the latest version)
by fax
by any other method.
You need to give casual employees the most up to date version of the CEIS that's in place when you issue the CEIS. The CEIS is updated regularly so you should check regularly to make sure you give your employees the correct, up to date version.
